Description:
Clad in gold and azure, an angel and a demon face each other, fighting over the morning sun, sundering the skies over the horizon in its amber light. While the angel has the rising star within reach, it is to the demon's side of the canvas that the disc of light belongs, like a dark omen of what is to come. The Sun embodies one's true self, the essence of what makes you "you". Torn apart between the opposing forces, it lies at the heart of the eternal battle: reason against emotion, truth against lies, life against death. On our journey of self-discovery, we hope to reach balance between our conflicting sides and finally soar through the skies, free and complete. Little do we know that it is through the very journey we go on that we truly fulfill ourselves.
Thoughts:
The main inspiration sources for this piece were Ghibli Studios' movie The Wind Rises, a tarot reading someone was kind enough to give me during the Anime St. Louis 2016 show, and a beautiful scenery on my way home. During the latter, I drove by some small factory cooling chimneys puffing out fluffy, plumpy little white clouds in the air. They would linger for a while, disperse, then blur away with their pale radiance. What a wonderful view it was. As for the tarot reading, it revealed to me that the opposing pair was overseeing my journey in search for happiness.
I am now left with questions: what path should we take on our way to fulfilling ourselves? While I don't know the answer, I know that we must take on the journey. As Steven Pressfield puts it: "If you were meant to cure cancer or write a symphony or crack cold fusion and you don't do it, you not only hurt yourself, even destroy yourself. You hurt your children. You hurt me. You hurt the planet[...] Don't cheat us of your contribution. Give us what you've got.” (The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles)
